6.3 - The Declaration of Independence

Starry

The main idea in the Declaration of Independence argues that government power comes from the consent of the governed, which means that we give the government the power, and people have the right to replace or abolish a government that violates their rights.

Natural Rights are rights that can’t be taken away. John Locke said that these are Life, Liberty, and Property, which was adapted by Thomas Jefferson into the Declaration of Independence as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Social Contract is a term used to describe how the government exists through an agreement between rulers and the people. People agree to follow laws in exchange for the protection of rights. However, if the government becomes abusive, people can alter or abolish it.

Popular Sovereignty means that political power comes from people and that governments only exist with the consent of the governed. If consent is broken, then legitimacy is lost.

The purpose of this document is to justify the American Revolution and explain why the colonies are separating from Great Britain. It also explains its complaints (grievances) against King George III and declares the colonies as an independent nation.
